McDonald was U.S. prosecutor Liz Lawrence in the first episode of her role played on CBS's The Good Wife legal drama in the year 2009. The role was reprised in the year 2018, playing Season the regular Liz Reddick in Paramount+'s The Good Fight. As a result of the role she played, McDonald received three Critics Choice Award nominations. She is currently appearing as a guest in Julian Fellowes' historical thriller The Gilded Age on HBO.
