McDonald was introduced to the television audience as a dramatic actress by Peabody Award winning CBS's Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters first 100 years. The year 1999 saw her starred along with Kathy Bates in ABC's acclaimed remake of Annie. In addition, she played a recurring part in NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit in the year 2000. McDonald's debut Emmy was awarded for her performance in the HBO film version of the Pulitzer Prize winner Wit. The film was directed by Mike Nichols with Emma Thompson as the lead the actress returned to television networks in 2003. The show she starred in was Mister Sterling and produced by Emmy Award Winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. McDonald joined The Bedford Diaries of the WB show The Bedford Diaries in early 2006. Following the season, she played in a role that was recurring on NBC's Television show Kidnapped. McDonald received a 4th Emmy nomination in recognition of her performance in HBO's film special of Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill in the year 2016. McDonald starred along with Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale in The Bite a six-episode pandemic-themed drama co-produced by Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios in 2021. McDonald was U.S. prosecutor Liz Lawrence in the first episode of her role played on CBS's The Good Wife legal drama in the year 2009. The role was reprised in the year 2018, playing Season the regular Liz Reddick in Paramount+'s The Good Fight. As a result of the role she played, McDonald received three Critics Choice Award nominations. She is currently appearing as a guest in Julian Fellowes' historical thriller The Gilded Age on HBO.
